(Kayana Szymczak for STAT)One of the best attributes you can have as a writer is speed. Indeed being a speedy writer will not only make the writing process so much faster, but it will also allow you to achieve more as a writer. But being a fast writer does not mean that you write haphazardly. It is the exact opposite in fact. To be a speedy writer means that you are skilled enough to write fast without creating many mistakes. In truth being a speedy writer means that you are highly skilled as a writer and can be counted on to write fast and still make quality work. Here are some efficient and effective tips on how to become a truly speedy writer.
  1. Practice your craft!

If you are serious about being a faster writer, you will need to practice like crazy. The same way athletes hone their muscles for competition so should you hone your writing skills to a razor sharp edge. Whether you are writing a book or just brushing up your poetry, you should make it a habit to practice your writing every day. Keeping yourself busy will allow you to stave off bad writing habits and writer’s block.

  1. Expand your vocabulary

One of the main reasons why some writers write slowly is because they have limited vocabularies. This can slow down the writing process because the lack of vocabulary will make expressing your ideas accurately quite difficult. Your limited repertoire of words will make your work sound sluggish and unconvincing. It will also make your wordplay seem repetitive and lacking originality. So if you do have a limited vocabulary, it is always a good idea to look up new words in the dictionary.

  1. Improve your typing speed

If you want to be a faster writer, you will also need to improve your typing speed. This is because your typing speed can also affect your writing speed. You can be a truly great writer and your grammar and vocabulary is perfect. But if your typing speed is lacking then you will still struggle to be a truly fast writer. So take the time to practice your typing every day. This may take a bit of time, but it will ultimately make you a much more effective and efficient writer.

  1. Be organized

Before you get started on the writing process it is important that you organize your thoughts and ideas. Get your research and ideas in order and make a simple outline. This will give your work structure that will keep you on track throughout the writing process. It is also a good idea to keep notes filled with valuable information about your topic. That way should you lose track of your plot or characters, you can take a look at the notes and get back on track.

  1. Do proper research work

One of the most important things you need to do before you get started on the writing process is to do proper research work. Whether you are writing a book on economics or a science fiction novel proper research work is necessary if you want to be a truly effective writer. It is imperative that you complete your research work before you write. That way you won’t have to waste time looking for references and facts during the writing process. With all your research work done, you can now invest your full attention on the writing process.

  1. Have the right mindset

Before you write anything you should have the right mindset. Whether you are writing a novel or just writing a story it is important that you know your main goal. It is also important that your mind is free from any distractions or negative thoughts. Remember that the writing process is a lot of hard work and if you don’t have the right mindset it is so easy to lose sight of your objective. So before you get started on the writing process it is important that you get your priorities straight. Ask yourself why you want to write. Who are you writing for? What is your ultimate goal? By setting your priorities straight and having the right mindset, you can be fully focused on the writing process and be a much faster writer.
